Design of cold-formed structures in Consteel according to Eurocode

Cold-formed sections are commonly used as secondary structural members in modern steel – and, in some cases, reinforced concrete – industrial structures. However, their role can extend far beyond secondary framing: they can also contribute to the overall stability of the primary structure by providing resistance against lateral loads. In some applications, the entire load-bearing structure can even be designed using cold-formed sections.

Due to their slenderness and thin-walled nature, cold-formed members are susceptible to several distinct stability phenomena. Their design therefore requires a different approach from that used for more traditional welded or hot-rolled sections, with particular attention to local, distortional, and global buckling, as well as their interaction.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The training begins with a review of the different stability phenomena that typically influence the strength of cold-formed sections, including local and distortional buckling, as well as relevant member buckling modes such as flexural, torsional, and lateral-torsional buckling.
The Eurocode approach to cross-section resistance is based on effective cross-sections, while member resistance is determined using buckling curves related to member slenderness. Alternative approaches to the effective cross-section method also exist. Although these methods are not currently included in the Eurocode, they are successfully used in international practice. The most widely used alternative is the Direct Strength Method (DSM), which will be introduced and explained during the course.
Following the theoretical part, the training moves to practical applications. These will start with the design of continuous, overlapped roof purlins, including the actual interaction between the connected roof sheeting and the purlin system.
The training will also address practical design questions that arise in everyday engineering practice, such as which orientation of Zed purlins is appropriate on an inclined roof slope, and how the orientation of tension-only purlin sag rods should be selected depending on the actual roof system and its structural behavior.
The training will then progress to the design of complete portal frame structures made exclusively from cold-formed sections.
The training will present several practical examples. All examples will be developed and solved using Consteel. The design approach is based on the Eurocode, but the training is also partially applicable to engineers working with other design standards and specifications.

Senior Research Engineer

Bálint is a structural engineer currently serving as Head of the R&D Group at Consteel. He leads the development of new software features, coordinates research activities, and manages international collaboration with Consteel partners. With over nine years of experience in structural analysis and software development, Bálint brings deep expertise in the finite element method, Eurocode 3, and AISC 360 standards. 

Previously, he worked as Engineering Manager for Butler Europe and Astron Building Systems, leading major European pre-engineered metal building producers, which has given him solid knowledge of this market segment. 
He has participated in several international steel-oriented conferences and is a member of the ECCS TC8 Committee.

For these calculations, a computer with Windows 11 and Consteel 19 installed is required. A trial license for Consteel can be requested prior to the training.
