Solving spatial problems of steel halls with planar models

Portal frames are often analysed as planar systems, with lateral bracing simplified or assumed to be infinitely stiff. These assumptions can significantly affect buckling verification. This training shows how the real 3D behaviour of lateral bracing systems can be reduced to an accurate equivalent 2D model, enabling reliable critical stress calculation and buckling design using the General Method.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

How lateral bracing stiffness influences out-of-plane buckling resistance
Why assuming infinitely stiff bracing in planar models can lead to unsafe results
How to reduce a real 3D lateral bracing system to an accurate equivalent 2D model
How to use the 2D model for automated critical stress calculations
A step-by-step stability analysis and design workflow for steel halls
In-plane stability design of sway frames using: effective length methods, eigenmode shapes as combined global and local imperfections, notional loads, global sway imperfections
Out-of-plane stability design using the General Method

WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?

This training is ideal for structural engineers seeking to specialize in the design of industrial halls, especially those focused on achieving optimal results by precisely evaluating the impact and interaction of every primary and secondary structural component.

During the training

  • No Consteel license is needed for the training.
  • The training will be demonstrated in Consteel, but no prior experience or installation is required to follow along.
  • However if you would like to try the advanced analysis and design methods and tools discussed in the training you can do it with a 30-day Trial version for free.
