Imperfections in buckling design of steel structures according to Eurocode

This training provides a comprehensive guide to using equivalent geometric imperfections in the buckling design of steel structural members according to Eurocode 3. It begins by clarifying the theoretical relationships between key mechanical concepts — geometric imperfection, buckling mode shape, and second-order analysis — before introducing the new second-generation Eurocode classification of imperfections (sway/non-sway, in-plane/out-of-plane, etc.). The training then demonstrates where and how these imperfections should be applied to perform a complete buckling check of both the structural model and its individual members.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

Mechanics of geometrical imperfections
Understand the mechanical relationships between linear buckling mode shapes, critical load factors, second-order analysis and geometrical imperfections
Classification of imperfections
Learn how and why imperfections and buckling mode shapes are classified
Eurocode rules
Understand the basic underlying assumptions and objectives of the Eurocode rules on imperfections, learn the key factors, limitations and possible generalizations
Application in practice
Learn how to model, analyze and control equivalent geometrical imperfections throughout the entire stability design process in Consteel

CEO, Consteel Solutions Ltd.

I have been working on the development of Consteel software for more than 20 years as CEO, responsible for strategic leadership, R&D, and marketing. As an active researcher in the field of steel structural design and member of structural standard maker’s committees (CEN-TC250-SC3-WG1 and ECCS TC8). I always seek modern and practice-oriented ways of improving the design process. I think that introducing and selling innovation and new methods in the construction industry, especially in the deservedly very conservative structural engineering sector is a constant challenge and that is my entire career has been about.
