Modern stability design: understand the ‘General Method’ of Eurocode

This training provides a comprehensive guide to the ‚General method for lateral and lateral-torsional buckling of structural components‘, specified in §6.3.4 (§8.3.4 in the revised numbering) of EN 1993-1-1 — the most advanced buckling design method available in the code. Significant emphasis is placed on understanding the theoretical background of the method and its formulas, as well as their connection to the well-known, traditional reduction-factor-based design approaches. Through practical application, the power of the method is demonstrated on a range of complex buckling problems using Consteel software.

Theoretical foundations 
Understand the mechanical background of the ‚General method‘ and how it generalizes the concepts of member slenderness and reduction factor for coupled buckling modes.
Key parameters from LBA 
Learn how to derive and apply αcr,op, αult,k, and the generalized relative slenderness directly from linear buckling analysis results. 
Connection to traditional methods 
Understand how the General method relates to the well-known reduction-factor-based design approaches, and where and why their results may differ. 
Working at the global model level 
Learn how to select and interpret relevant global buckling modes without isolating members into reference lengths with defined buckling parameters.
