Introduction to parametric design

Learn the fundamentals of parametric design in Rhino with Grasshopper, our Pangolin plugin, and Consteel’s in-built scripting environment, Descript. This training explores how these tools work together to expand your design possibilities, combining the best of both platforms for innovative solutions.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

Through this course, we’ll introduce the foundational concepts of the parametric environment in Rhino (with Grasshopper and our plugin Pangolin) and explore our unique environment in Consteel, called Descript, showing how each can be applied to enhance parametric design possibilities. We’ll place equal emphasis on both software platforms to help participants see the full scope of their potential. 

Navigate the Rhino and Grasshopper interface for parametric design
Explore Consteel’s Descript environment for in-built scripting
Connect Grasshopper and Consteel through live scripting, using a simple beam example
Create a parametric transmission tower model, from wireframe geometry to Consteel model analysis
Create and investigate a hall structure with a canopy, interpreting Consteel results in Grasshopper
Compare and optimize a simple truss design in Grasshopper and Descript, focusing on section optimization

Terms of Participation

WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?

This course is tailored for anyone interested in exploring parametric design through practical tools and examples, especially if they want to automate aspects of their work. It’s suitable for: 

Those who have heard of parametric design and Grasshopper but have little experience, though they are familiar with Consteel as a structural software. 
Those who know Grasshopper but are not familiar with Consteel. 
Those who are unfamiliar with both tools.

PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE

Rhino 3D

Rhino 3D installed (Rhino 8 – which is automatically includes Grasshopper)

This course is based on the use of Rhino 3D, so participants need an active license. Rhino offers a 90-day trial period available.

Consteel

An active Consteel license and version 18 installed 

Not a Consteel user yet? Don’t worry, you can participate in our training with a 30-day Trial version with a special 60-day extension for free.

Pangolin

Pangolin 3.2 installed


Pangolin is an Add-On for Grasshopper, you can download it for free from here.
